Housing-with-care developments run by housing associations and local authorities tend to be called ‘extra care’ or ‘independent living’ schemes, and explicitly seek to accommodate people who need daily help. Both ownership and rental options are commonly available, as well as alternative ways of paying for the services on offer – including part deferring payment until a property is sold. Generally the whole complex will be designed with attention to accessibility for residents with restricted mobility. People living at the home, relatives and visitors all commented on how good the care was.

This is being carried out with the minimum of disruption to residents possible. The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report. Wherever possible, Inspectorate reports and grades are accessible from the housing-with-care pages on this website. People had an assessment of their needs and a care plan that ensured these were met. People received timely personal care and told us that staff were responsive to their health needs. Risks to people’s welfare or safety had been assessed and steps taken to minimise the risk whilst allowing people to remain as independent as possible. Where action was needed to improve things in the service this happened quickly. The registered manager was supported by a team who were supported with the necessary skills to fulfil their role. People’s health care and nutritional needs were supported and met by staff who possessed the necessary care skills.
The registered manager and staff with a management responsibility were aware of and had used the correct procedures to lawfully deprive people of their liberty. Applications to the appropriate authorities to lawfully deprive people of their liberty had been sought and approved. Staff had a good understanding of how to apply the MCA and DoLS codes of practice. Our infection prevention and control inspections look at how well people using a service are kept safe from the spread of infections. With a few exceptions, accommodation in a care home cannot be bought or rented like retirement housing. Think of them more like full-board hotel accommodation with 24 hour care available.

The Care Quality Commission is the official regulator for the care sector. They inspect care homes and care services to make sure they are safe, caring, effective, responsive and well-led. They inspect care services to ensure they are supporting peoples wellbeing; appropriately setup; properly planning out care; are well led; and effectively staffed, each criteria is given a grade out of 6.
